National Science Foundation (NSF) Research Experiences for Undergraduates Program

Provides support for undergraduates to engage in summer research programs at various U.S. and foreign institutions. At an REU site, a small group of undergraduates work on a pre-defined research project under the supervision of a faculty member. Students receive a stipend and sometimes assistance with housing, meals, and travel. REU projects involve students in meaningful ways in ongoing research programs or in research projects specifically designed for the REU program

National Physical Sciences Consortium Graduate Fellowship

Provides up to $20,000 annually for up to 6 years to increase the number of American citizens with graduate degrees in the physical sciences and related engineering fields, emphasizing recruitment of a diverse applicant pool (95% of fellows have been minority, female, or both). Fellows may also hold a research or teaching assistantship. Fellows receive one or two paid summer internships with a government agency and are assigned a mentor.

Department of Homeland Security STEM Summer Internship Program

The National HS-STEM Summer Internship Program provides undergraduate juniors and seniors the opportunity to work with homeland security professionals and researchers for up to ten weeks during the summer. Participants are provided a stipend and conduct research in DHS mission-relevant research areas at federal research facilities and DHS Centers of Excellence.

Woodrow Wilson Teaching Fellowships

The WW Teaching Fellows—current senior undergrads, recent grads, or career changers—are for students with majors in STEM fields (science, technology, engineering, math, and some related areas) who want to pursue graduate-level teacher preparation at one of 22 participating universities in Indiana, Michigan, Ohio, and New Jersey. Each Teaching Fellow receives a $30,000 stipend to enroll at one of these partner institutions for a master’s-degree program that includes a full academic year of experience in secondary-school classrooms, along with intensive coursework.
