From Cedar Hills, Utah, Mengxi Seeley is majoring in International Relations with a minor in Chinese. A winner of the NSEP Boren Undergraduate Scholarship to study abroad in China, Mengxi believes her participation in the BYU Chinese Flagship Program and in a BYU Study Abroad program to the China Foreign Affairs University in Beijing were instrumental in helping prepare her for the Boren Scholarship. She credits the Flagship Program’s intensive language classes and one-on-one tutoring for helping her Chinese language skills. Through talking to recruiters and professors on campus Mengxi has been able to narrow her career/academic goals and write a more compelling statement of purpose for the Boren application. In addition to her study abroad and Flagship experiences, Mengxi is also grateful that she has been a Teaching Assistant for various classes: an opportunity that has helped her see beyond coursework and really engage in her major and minor. Mengxi plans to be in Nanjing China for the 2013-2014 academic year. After graduation Mengxi wants to gain work experience in translation before pursuing graduate studies.
